TMC Visitor Update: Week of October 5, 2026

Posted Monday, October 5, 2026 · Updated Wednesday, October 7 · Flawless Properties

Weekly notes for families, caregivers and clinicians spending time at the Texas Medical Center. Our two furnished 3-bedroom homes in Sunnyside sit about 2.5 miles (roughly 12 minutes by car) from TMC, so we keep an eye on what affects the drive, the parking and the downtime in between. Plans change, so check the linked source before you go.

This week at the Medical Center

  • S. Braeswood Blvd. lane closures. Multiple southbound lanes between Cambridge St. and Moursund St. are closed for a City sewer rehabilitation project, scheduled through November 2. Allow extra time if you approach from the south side. (TMC Updates & Alerts)
  • Garage 23 power washing wraps up this weekend. Work runs overnight, 7:30 p.m.–5:00 a.m., and is scheduled to finish October 10. If you usually park there on weekend evenings, plan for another level or garage. (TMC Updates & Alerts)
  • Garage 6 power washing starts Friday, Oct. 9. Weekend work, 7:30 p.m.–5:00 a.m., through November 8. (TMC Updates & Alerts)
  • Garage 10 exterior power washing starts Saturday, Oct. 10. Daytime work, 7:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., through November 8. This one overlaps visiting hours, so expect some levels or spaces to be blocked off. (TMC Updates & Alerts)
  • Elevator work in TMC garages. City-required flood-switch installations in elevator pits are under way across garage locations, with limited elevator availability during work periods. If someone in your group has trouble with stairs, give yourself a few extra minutes. (TMC Updates & Alerts)

TMC Parking & Transportation: 713-791-6161. TMC Police (non-emergency): 713-795-0000.

Coming up

  • S. Braeswood lanes are scheduled to reopen after November 2.
  • Garage 6 and Garage 10 power washing both wrap up November 8.
  • Garage elevator work is scheduled to run through December 10. (TMC Updates & Alerts)

Low-key things to do nearby

For an hour away from the hospital, a few free options close to campus:

  • Free Thursdays at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Permanent collections are free on Thursdays; special exhibitions still need a ticket. Children 12 and under are free every day. (MFAH)
  • Free Family Night at the Children's Museum Houston, every Thursday, 5–8 p.m. Free tickets are required and open 48 hours ahead; groups must include at least one child. (Children's Museum Houston)
  • Morning sound bath in Hermann Park, Saturdays 8–9 a.m. at Hermann Park's The Commons (Oct. 10, 17, 24 and 31). Free. (Hermann Park Conservancy)
  • Zumba in Hermann Park, Saturday Oct. 10, 9:30–10:30 a.m. at Hermann Park's The Commons. Free. (Hermann Park Conservancy)
  • Walk with a Doc, Saturday Oct. 17, 9–10:30 a.m. at McGovern Centennial Gardens. Free; repeats Saturday Nov. 21 for anyone here later in the fall. (Hermann Park Conservancy)

Weather

The National Weather Service expects a hot, mostly dry stretch: highs near 90°F and lows in the low-to-mid 70s, sunny through Thursday, and only 20–30% shower chances Friday afternoon and early next week. No weather hazards are posted for Houston (NWS forecast).

The Gulf system: the low we flagged Monday became Tropical Depression Nine in the southwestern Gulf on Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center expects it to strengthen and move east, then northeast, toward the northern Gulf Coast between southeastern Louisiana and the Florida Panhandle by Friday, away from Houston (NHC advisory). Local forecasters don't expect a direct threat to Texas, though the coast may see rip currents and some rain this weekend (FOX 26). Tropical tracks can change, so give the forecast a quick look before weekend appointments.

Event traffic to plan around

The stadium complex south of the Medical Center (Reliant Stadium, formerly NRG Stadium; ABC13) has no major events in the next seven days. Dates ahead that will slow Kirby, Fannin and the South Loop:

  • Texans vs. Giants, Sunday Oct. 25, noon, Reliant Stadium (Houston Texans).
  • Ye at Reliant Stadium, Saturday Oct. 31 (FOX 26).
  • Texans vs. Colts, Thursday Nov. 19, 7:15 p.m. A weeknight game, so evening shift changes may overlap with game traffic (Houston Texans).
  • Texans vs. Ravens, Sunday Nov. 29, noon (Houston Texans).
  • Downtown at Toyota Center: Rockets preseason vs. Oklahoma City on Oct. 15; home opener vs. Dallas on Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m.; then home games Oct. 31 (Oklahoma City), Nov. 2 (Boston) and Nov. 11 (Golden State) (FOX 26, KPRC). Mostly a downtown and US-59 issue, not a TMC one.

Halloween is the busiest night to watch: a stadium concert south of the Medical Center and a Rockets game downtown on the same evening. See all dates on our events page.
